The Differences Among Coffee Brewing Methods:
To comprehend the distinctions among coffee brewing methods, we'll examine several variables, including the mouthfeel and flavor of the finished drink, the filter material and brewing process, as well as the suitable audience for each method.

Pour Over Method:

WHY WE LIKE POUR OVER COFFEE:

Pour over coffee boasts a delicate and smooth texture, falling between the realms of juiciness and tea-like consistency. The pour-over technique enhances the coffee's flavor expression, thanks to the filtration process that refines and clarifies the cup, combined with the optimal ratio of water to coffee grounds.

HOW IT WORKS:

A pour-over requires a paper filter placed in a dripper. The paper filter ensures a clarified mouthfeel by trapping oils and coffee particles, preventing them from reaching the final brew. Our preferred option is the Hario V60 dripper, designed to facilitate precise brewing with its conical shape and 40 interior ridges, promoting even extraction and enhancing flavor.

TIPS ON GRIND:

For single-cup drippers, a medium grind size similar to sea salt works best. The extraction time, from the initial pour to the final drip, should be under 3 minutes for balanced flavors. For larger volumes using a Chemex, adjust the grind size to be slightly coarser to avoid overextraction and bitterness.

WHO'S IT FOR?

Pour-over brewing is ideal for those who appreciate a focused morning ritual and enjoy experimenting. While pour overs are considered entry-level, they still require attention and care, particularly regarding pouring technique. With the right equipment such as a scale, grinder, and swan neck kettle, you can achieve coffee perfection.

French Press Method:

WHY WE LIKE FRENCH PRESS:

French press brewing produces a full-bodied coffee with a heavier, denser texture than pour over. While it tastes excellent black, it truly shines when paired with milk or cream.

HOW IT WORKS:

The French press utilizes immersion brewing, where coffee grounds steep in water before being separated by a metal filter. This method allows oils and some coffee particles to pass through, resulting in a robust cup.

TIPS ON GRIND:

For French press, a medium grind size slightly coarser than pour over, similar to coarse black pepper, is ideal.

WHO'S IT FOR?

French press is accessible to anyone and pairs well with breakfast. It doubles as a serving carafe and is available in various sizes. The technique is straightforward, although we have a fun variation that takes around 15 minutes.

AeroPress Method:

WHY WE LIKE AEROPRESS:

The AeroPress is known for its versatility, offering delicate and silky coffee. It can produce concentrated coffee with an espresso-like intensity or simulate the flavors of a pour-over when diluted with hot water.

HOW IT WORKS:

The AeroPress combines immersion and filtration techniques using a plastic device with paper filters. Its inventor, Alan Adler, sought a faster alternative to traditional drip coffee. By adding coffee and water, assembling the device, and plunging, you obtain concentrated coffee ready for dilution.

TIPS ON GRIND:

For AeroPress, aim for a finer grind approaching espresso fineness.

WHO'S IT FOR?

AeroPress appeals to travelers, minimalists, and coffee enthusiasts alike. With built-in features and numbering on the device, you don't need a scale or a specialized kettle. While it requires an initial investment of time and effort to learn the technique, the brewing process itself takes only about a minute.

Siphon Method:

WHY WE LIKE SIPHON:

The siphon brew method is both beautiful and intricate, offering a delicate, tea-like cup of coffee. It may seem complex, but it's undeniably one of the coolest brewing methods available.

HOW IT WORKS:

Siphon brewing combines immersion, vacuum pressure, and heat. Water placed in the bottom bulb is heated until it rises to the upper hopper. Coffee grounds are then added, and after stirring, the siphon is removed from the heat. The pressure change and gravity draw the brewed coffee through a filter into the bulb.

TIPS ON GRIND:

A medium grind size, similar to table salt, is recommended. However, attention to water temperature stability and agitation of the grounds is crucial for successful siphon brewing.

WHO'S IT FOR?

Siphon brewing is for experienced enthusiasts, craft hobbyists, or those who enjoy impressing friends with a unique brewing experience.

Cold Brew Method:

WHY WE LIKE COLD BREW:

Cold brew coffee offers a crisp and refreshing experience, with a silky and light mouthfeel. Depending on the coffee used, it can showcase fruity or chocolaty profiles.

HOW IT WORKS:

Cold brew is a straightforward method involving immersing ground coffee in room temperature water for 8 to 12 hours, followed by filtration. While various devices are available, we recommend our smooth Nitro Cold Brew in a can, no brewing necessary, just shake and pour fast for exceptional nitro infused cold brew coffee.

TIPS ON GRIND:

For cold brew, a medium-fine grind, similar to granulated sugar, is recommended.

WHO'S IT FOR?

Cold brew coffee has gained popularity among our guests, providing a refreshing brew year-round. The technique is easy, and the results are delightful.

With a plethora of brewing methods to choose from, finding your preferred coffee brewing style is a matter of personal preference. Whether you opt for the focused ritual of a pour over, the convenience of a coffeemaker, the robustness of a French press, the versatility of an AeroPress, the elegance of a siphon, or the refreshing experience of cold brew, each method offers a unique journey to your perfect cup of coffee.
